Printing Skin: An Inkjet for Tissue Engineering

EPFL scientists are working on creating artificial living tissues using a very special kind of inkjet printer. Still in its initial stages, this technology could nonetheless soon provide biological samples that could be used for testing new drugs.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge lead by Prof. Andrea Ferrari have recently demonstrated a technique for producing inkjet-printable inks based predominantly on small (<1um) single-layer graphene flakes. This is an improvement over existing approaches, since this does not use the readily-soluble graphene oxide flakes, which act as electrically-defective insulators. This is important because graphene oxide fails to recover its full pristine electrical characteristics even when it is reduced (i.e., oxygen removed).

Biomaterials for tissue engineering applications need to fulfill numerous requirements regarding chemical and physical properties of the material surface, design, function, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, the scaffold serves as a template that directs the formation of tissue. The inner pore network and its outer geometry need to be well-defined to allow cell migration and successful vascularization.

Welcome
Welcome to Technology Platform 3NEO. This Platform is within the category "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, New Materials and New Industrial Processes" in the Platforms catalog of the Science and Innovation Ministry.

The platform has currently over 65 members from universities, research centers, business associations and companies representing the industrial and business scope.

The platform is currently being expanded, so for the progress of it,  is very important to have the support of companies and entities that may be interested in the objectives of the Platform 3NEO.

Membership in the Platform does not involve any additional burden, on the contrary, all members will be able to benefit from first-hand the progress of the Platform.

Las principales razones por las cuales es interesante participar son: • Obtener información reciente sobre las tendencias e innovaciones de las TIC. • Promover productos propios, tecnologías y know-how.
